An automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) is a generic term for a system that automatically stores items in a repository and can also retrieve them. ASRS is a type of warehouse automation technology.
Ghost inventory, also referred to as phantom inventory, describes goods that an inventory accounting system considers to be on-hand at a storage location, but are not actually available.
Planograms are often called MODs or Modulars. MODs refer to how to arrange products on the retail store shelves in 4-foot linear section within a store aisle.
Goods to person is used to describe a traditional method of filling orders that delivers product to an order picker or customer at a retail pick-up location. This can also be referred to as a “goods-to-picker” system.
Cube automated storage and retrieval systems or hive systems are densely packed automated tote storage systems. These systems use interlocking bins stacked inside an aluminum grid or cube with no space for aisles. This robotic cube storage uses a fleet of robots to drive across tracks on top of the grid and work together to move bins out of the system and deliver to operator ports.
In supermarket retail, a hi-lo operator is a store that offers a variety of prices. Sometimes an item is priced high. Sometimes the item is on sale and priced low.
Everyday low pricing (EDLP) is a version of customary pricing, whereby a retailer strives to sell its goods and services at consistently low prices throughout the selling season. These retailers usually offer few discounts because their prices are already reduced. Customers do not need coupons or need to wait for a sale to purchase at a lower price.
Eaches is a retail supply chain term used for individual items versus a full case. For example, one box of cereal versus a case of cereal. This term is commonly used in the e-commerce industry, since the need to pick small lots of products for online orders has increased in recent years.
Shrinkage or shrink is the loss of inventory due to errors, shoplifting, employee theft, supplier fraud, spoilage or expired product.
A dry fire suppression system is a type of fire suppression system used in locations where water would do significant damage to infrastructure or equipment. A gas is used to displace atmospheric oxygen and extinguish a fire by starving it of an oxidiser. It is not generally used in occupied spaces.
Seismic design is an area of architecture dedicated to the structural analysis of buildings, bridges, and roads, with the aim of making them resistant to earthquakes and other seismic activity.
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a polymer that, when coated onto paperboard, creates a moisture and vapor barrier and improves heat sealing. Because it is inexpensive, LDPE is a widely used poly coating for paperboard.
National Electrical Code (NEC) is a set of minimum standards and regulations that governs planning, construction, and installation of electrical conductors and equipment. The NEC is the basis for all electrical codes used in the United States.
Plenum refers to an air chamber in a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system or to the space above the ceiling or below the floor used for air circulation. In many buildings, the plenum space is often used to route conductors and cables.
