Last Mile Delivery

grocery last mile delivery
Last mile delivery is defined as the very last step of the delivery process when a parcel is moved from a transportation hub or warehouse to its final destination, usually a personal residence or retail store.

Last mile delivery is both the most expensive and time-consuming part of the shipping process. The increased cost of fuel has made this step more expensive recently and the continuous rise of ecommerce sales have increased the number of packages that need to be delivered. The final leg of shipment typically involves multiple stops with only one or two packages getting dropped off at each location. In rural areas, delivery points along a route could be several miles apart which slows the delivery times. In urban areas, delivery locations are closer to each other but traffic delays the speed at which deliveries can be made.

Grocery is one of the key industries with a rapid increase in last mile support needed due to the growth of online grocery in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many grocery retailers are prioritizing investment in last mile delivery to improve delivery speed and flexibility. Speed is especially important with grocery last mile delivery because of the perishable nature of food items.
